BABY AND TODDLER SHEETS

 

Cot Bed and Junior Bed bedding are one of the most important items of nursery equipment you will have to buy. Pram and moses basket sheets will probably last you 6 months at best (depending on how long your baby grows) and cots seem to have a reasonably short life span. Cot beds and junior beds should last your baby right up to the transition to a toddler bed or a single bed. In fact, some cot beds have the advantage of converting into a junior bed toddler bed at a later date which in theory means that you can use the same mattress and covers throughout the lifetime of the bed.

 

The standard cot bed and junior mattress size is 70 x 140 cms which is what most bedding manufacturers tend to work to when making fitted and flat cot bed and toddler sheets. You may find that custom cot beds or bespoke models may require a slightly wider or longer mattress which you may have to specially order in or have made up. So when you're buying a standard fitted cot bed sheet the elasticated edge will give sufficient coverage to the four sizes of the mattress. If you are buying a substantially larger mattress then you may have to consider opting for a flat sheet. This isn't to much of a problem if use the sheet in conjunction with a waterproof cot mattress protector. We should mention at this point that it is a good idea to use a mattress protector as it enables you to use a soft sheet on top which can be frequently changed and preserves the life of the mattress.

 

FITTED SHEETS

 

Cot bed fitted sheets (70 x 140 cms) are available from a number of manufacturers in a wide range of colours. The main colours are obviously white, cream, pink and blue. Other colours including yellow, mint green and aqua are quite easy to obtain if you are trying to colour match with your babies nursery room. Jersey cotton is the main fabric used for the weave as it is warm, stretchy and soft for your baby. Jersey cotton is usually made from a combination of cotton and synthetic.

 

THE QUALITY OF THE COTTON

 

The Quality of the cotton weave will vary between manufacturers which will obviously affect the price. All fitted cot bed sheets regardless of the price, should last the duration (that includes frequent machine washes). The recommended temperature for washing jersey cotton sheets is 40 degrees C (but always refer to the manufacturers washing instructions).

 

Advances in manufacturing have meant that you can buy ultra soft 100% waterproof fitted sheets (Tencel Technology) that eliminates the need for a separate mattress cover or fitted sheet. These Tencel sheets are much dearer than standard sheets but you are paying for just one product instead of two and they are a much superior quality.

 

SMOOTH COMBED AND FLANNELETTE FLAT SHEETS

 

Cot bed junior bed flat sheets are available in either a smooth combed cotton or a flannelette option. The cot bed flannelette sheets are extremely soft and will come to life after the 1st initial wash. They can be used as either a top or a bottom sheet (which is tucked under the mattress for added security).

 

Cot bed and toddler bedding is a very important buy for parents, because babies and toddlers need to have just enough bedding to ensure they comfortable in the summer and snug and warm in the winter. Its probably a good idea to have at least 3 fitted and flannelette flat cot bed sheets in your babies bedding draw so you are prepared for any accidents in the night!
