what is the best type of straight razor to shave with.?
is it better to shave with a very hollow razor like an extra hollow or one with a wider wedge like the true wedge. and what are the benefits of shaving with them..........and which type would give the closest, cleanest shave.
A big wedge, like say a 7/8 or 8/8 from wade & butcher is my preference as I like the weight and it seems to plow through days of growth but it's a little tough to maneuver around the nose. I've also got a old "full singing" 5/8 from waterville cutlery which I find much more aesthetically appealing but just doesn't cut like the big boy. I also have a dovo 5/8 that is a pretty hollow grind and it's probably the least efficient straight I've ever owned (but style, brand, size, and grind are all personal preferences). Buying new I think I'd go thiers izard if you want a hollow razor, a wedge i'd go vintage wade and butcher, either way have it sharpened by an expert and have your stropping technique down before you get it (practice with a butter knife).
