Tri-Core Processor? at 2.1ghz is like 6.3ghz?
I am about to buy a computer with a AMD Phenom™ triple-core processor 8450. I currently have a Pentium 4 with 2.6 Ghz
the new computer has 2.1GHz in its specs. I fell behind on computers lately. I didn't even know PCI express existed tell recently lol. so im clueless
Though I use computers mostly for school I do like to play some games from time to time. And I don't want to sell my Pentium 4 for a computer that can't play high end PC games.
My question is, since it is a tri-core processor does that mean it is 2.1ghz multiplied by three? so it's more like 6.3ghz
No. There's a huge myth running around these days that Quad or Tri is always better.
Reality:
Typically you get 15% better performance with a Quad Core processor vs. a Dual core processor of the same speed.
Problem:
Cost of the Quad core is typically around 500% higher than the same speed Dual core.
If you aren't a hard core gamer, getting more than 2 cores is not cost efficient. If you are a hard core gamer, getting more than 2 cores may not be cost efficient.
If you want the best bang for your buck that you can play every Direct X game there is with reasonably well:
1) Avoid AMD, they aren't even a contender now for performance.
2) Get an Intel Core 2 Duo that's 45nm process such as the E8400 or the E8500. Your wallet will thank you. You won't miss the 15% for $4000 more.
Intel hates me for saying things like this but, it's the truth. AMD hates me even more.
I have a system with an Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 processor. I have the exact same components in another system with an Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 processor. Difference in speed 15% on average for DirectX games. Frame rate.
Difference in cost:
I paid $160 less for the Quad core system, because I won the Quad core processor as a door prize at the Intel Channel Conference in June of this year. You'd pay $1100 to $1500 for the processor online.
If you're dead set on having more cores, call me. I'll be happy to custom build a Quad core for you. I'll be happier to build you a Duo Core that will outperform MOST of the Quad cores, and ALL of the Tri-cores.
