Ball Dresses & Ball Gowns – How to choose the dress that's perfect for you

The School Ball is without a doubt the biggest social event on the high school calendar. It's the night of nights, a night to celebrate and create life long memories.

For most girls what they are going to wear is their highest priority so the search for the perfect dress begins.

There are many styles of dresses and gowns to choose from. So how do you know what is going to look best on you?

Lets start with explaining the types of ball dress styles available.

Formal Ball Gowns – The classic Cinderella style gown with a fitted bodice and a full skirt.

 A Line Dresses & Gowns – A dress or gown with a skirt that flares out like the legs of an A with vertical seams running from shoulders to the hem.

Empire Line or Sheath style Dresses & Gowns – A ball dress or ball gown with the waistline pulled up right under the bust and falling straight to the floor.

The majority of us DON'T have the perfect airbrushed bodies of those we continually see in the magazines……….

To show off your figure choose a dress or gown that highlights your assets. Here are a few tips on how to do that.

If you stand 1.9 metres in bare feet

• Try – Lucky you, most all styles will flatter you. To show off your long legs try a  full length dress perhaps with a front or side split.
• Avoid – Little frilly dresses.

If you have large breasts

• Try – V neck dresses or gowns but DON'T show too much cleavage and make sure you wear a supportive bra.
• Avoid –  Shoe string straps.

If you have big hips and would like to make them look smaller

• Try - Full-skirted dresses or gowns like the classic ball gown like Cinderella's ball dress. An Empire line dress or any gown that draws the focus upward. With this style, eyes will be off your hips -- and on your slender waist. Remember, you don't have big hips: You've got killer curves!
• Avoid - Sheath style dresses and gowns and other super fitted styles, or V-necks, which lead the eye downward.

If you would like to flatten out your tummy

• Try – An empire line gown which will give you a long, slim look.  Try corset-style bodice, which will emphasize your bust.
• Avoid - Princess cut ball dresses, gowns and sheaths which will draw attention to your midsection, sashes and horizontal stripes.

If you are heavy in the arms

• Try - Dresses & gowns with short sleeves, off-the shoulder necklines, or see-through lace sleeves which will camouflage your upper arms. Look for a dress that has a sweetheart neckline, which will draw attention to your bust instead of your arms.  If you want a strapless dress try a wrap.
• Avoid - Sleeveless, strapless, and spaghetti-strap ball dresses.

If you are short and want to look taller

• Try - A-line dresses or with a fitted sheath. Keep it simple, and these silhouettes will help you add some length.
• Avoid - Big formal ball gowns, shoes with ankle straps

If you have a big booty and want to hide it

• Try - Strapless gowns or dresses or any other full-skirted style. A corset-style or another type of fitted bodice dress.
• Avoid - Sheath style dresses or gowns or anything made with mega-clingy material.

If you want to make your bust appear larger

• Try - Ball dresses or formal ball gowns that has detail in the bust eg gathering, ruching or beading.
