Can a minor live alone?
I am 16, turning 17 this June. I am a junior in high school. my friend is a sophomore in college. she has and owns an apartment that she won't be using this summer. she offered to let me stay there so she can have some extra cash, and have someone watch it. I live in a different state than she does (I live in Oregon. appt is in CA) and I plan on saving money prior to this summer to pay the rent and then have money for food and other things. I want to get a job and play golf in the junior tour down there. I'm a straight edged kid, don't drink or do drugs. I want to know if it would even be legal to do this?
I really just want to experience what it's like to live on my own, as I will be in college next year. basically a test run of what it's gonna be like. it would be just me, unless I can find a roommate to go with me.
As long as your parents agree, there is no need to be emancipated to do this. There is nothing specifically illegal about living on your own. However, if something did happen to you, there is a small chance your parents could get into some trouble for child neglect.
Also, if your friend rents her apartment, you should be aware it is unlikely she is allowed to sublease it, especially to a minor. The landlord could try to evict you if they found out. If she actually owns it, you're fine. Just make sure you work out with her all the details of the lease, like maintenance, payment and security deposit. It can be kind of tough to occupy someone's home for a long time while their gone. They return to find their stuff rearranged or missing and blame you.
Besides those potential pitfalls, you should be ok.
