1999Escort what is wrong?
when i turn it over it sounds like it wants to start, but not firing off. When I keep trying the battery dies. Ill charge the battery, slam the gas pedal all the way down. Makes a horrible bang click sound and engine shakes. Runs for a second then putters out and off. White smoke comes out. A month ago my car died, puttered dead. Restarted engine and it was fine. Just recently the odometer stopped working (all the meters) and the service engine light came on. Reecntly as well when I go into reverse, it dies (putter sound) - but If I go in reverse and gently tap the gas it wont die.

I replaced the battery also before I posted this , forgot to mention.
could the alternator really make my card make that awful clicking bang noise when trying to start it?
i had the same problem with my 1996 escort! i took it to the mechanics (before i was a qualified mechanic myself) and they said it was a problem with the clutch, exhaust, battery, and pistons in the engine, this all cost me about £400 to put right, but is drove like it had in the past, i later sold it on to make a hefty profit, and am being told all is good. hope i could help!
