Where should I start in the X-Men comic series?
I've never read any X-Men comics before but I would like to start. I would like to read about the beginning of the mutant school and about young Jean Grey, Cyclops, ect. because the x-men first class movie is coming out in June. I was just wondering where I should start.
The general rule of thumb is simple. Pick a starting point that was written by Chris Claremont. He's done the most and is easily the _father_ of the modern take on the X-Men. And there are several--you need not go _all_ the way back to the 1980s to the Claremont/Byrne material or the Claremont/Cockrum stuff. Going back to one of the more recent Claremont arcs will suffice (the Claremont/Jim Lee stuff is pretty good too).
But basically, you want to head to the public library (or a good collegiate library), look up their collection of collected trade books (comic book arcs collected in one book), and start from there before you spend money. Also note: Grant Morrison did well on his X-Men run, but he did so mainly by _breaking_ a lot of the unofficial rules Claremont had laid down, so it is a different sort of take on it. Even Marvel didn't always like where Morrison took the X-Men and mutants in general.
But yeah. If you're talking X-Men, the real stuff, you cannot possibly go wrong with any of Claremont's work. Truly. (just be advised that _X-Men Forever_ is not in current continuity, at all whatsoever--that is its own thing, a parallel timeline continuation of the Claremont/Jim Lee stuff)
