reshafting golf clubs?
I have a set of TaylorMade r7 cgb MAX 2009 irons Reg. Graphite, The thing is I dont like the graphite that much and and want to have Reg steel shafts put on, But someone at a Pro shop told me that the heads I have on there are balanced for graphite. What do you recommend I do to have steel shafts put on and will it effect the play of the clubs. Is there a certain weight shaft that would be needed to balance the club. Thanks!
The head's aren't balanced for anything. They have weightports, but they're filled with tungsten that can't be removed. That's for lowering the head's center of gravity location, not its swingweight.
If you had a steel shaft and a graphite shaft side-by-side, and all their specs were the same... they'd play the same. The graphite would be a little better at vibration absorbing, but that's it. Graphite-shafted irons are made at least .5" longer than their steel-shafted counterpart because of that swingweight (balanced; or how heavy the head feels) issue: it's too expensive to retool the molds that make the heads in an attempt to make them heavier. So instead, they're just made longer, to the detriment/benefit (the OEMs don't care which) of the everyday golfer.
You will be changing variables by switching to steel. If you go with a heavier model shaft, you'll make the whole club heavier... if you can still swing with speed, good; but since I don't know you, I couldn't tell you if this would be a good thing or a bad thing. You'll most likely have the clubs shortened by at least .5". If you were to switch from, say, a 90g graphite shaft to a 120g steel one, you're looking at increasing the swing weight by about 3 points (~9g in the shaft = 1 swing weight point); One-half inch difference in length equals 3 swing weight points; so, each would canel the other out, making it your normal swing weight. Of course, if you went with a 90g steel model, and had the shaft shortened .5", things would get pretty interesting... you'd have to add weight to the head (using either lead tape or tip pins in the shaft) or switch to a very-lightweight grip model to bring things back to your normal swing weight.
There's also the possibility that the lie angles would change with the decreased length. .5" doesn't sound like much, but it might, so it's something to consider. Regardless, there's a lot of words here, but it's not as bad as it sounds. Better still, it's possible to make the switch. You just have to make sure the decision is as educated as it can be... don't just switch for switching's sake. If there's someone at your proshop you can mull this over with, the better. For all the things I've said, I can't tell you if this would be a good idea or not, since I can't see your swing or anything like that. But get that "hands on" with a clubfitter, and s/he will be able to steer you in the correct direction.
