Very Stupid Goldfish Question! Come have fun with this one....?
Okay. I have a 50 gallon fully cycled tank with double filtration. The water is pristine. In this tank, I have one ribbon tail goldfish.
I spent months planning this tank. It is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I was so excited to see my new fish enjoy his luxurious new habitat!
So here is the problem.... The moment I put my goldie in, he swam behind a plant in the corner and wont come out.
He eats and is healthy, robust even, but he never swims around the tank. He just putters behind his plant.
So what do you guys think? Is my goldfish just special? Or am I doing something wrong? Would another goldie make him more confident?
I am open to all suggestions!

I really don't want to move the plants....the tank looks so great. Besides, I don't want to take away his security blanket.
Goldfish are indeed a social species. They really need to at least be kept in pairs to be healthy and display normal behavior. Another goldfish will not overstock the tank, and it will allow both enough room to grow huge and be healthy.
You could also add some 'dither fish'. In addition to the goldfish, a small school of white cloud minnows would ease both of the fish. White clouds are also a cold water species, and add a bit of color and activity to the tank. With two fancy goldfish, and six white clouds, the tank will be healthy and active.
