Where can I find a music collaborator?

I have some lyrics that I just wrote, but for the life of me I can't come up with music! So I started thinking about collaborating with someone who could write music, specifically pop. Do you think this is a good idea? If I wanted to give the song to a producer, would I have to get their permission or vice versa? Would they own the music and would I own the lyrics, or would we own both? Where can I find a music collaborator, or is anyone interested? Thank you so much in advance!

If you collaborate with someone you make an arrangement with them as to how any royalty income from the song is split. Traditionally it would be 50/50 but there are all sorts of arrangements made for all sorts of reasons. You would own both the lyrics and the tune. So if somebody records an instrumental version of the song, you still receive your portion of the royalty as a lyricist. And vica versa, say Stephen King or somebody quotes your lyric in a book, the writer of the tune component would receive a royalty.

To receive a royalty payment you would need to have your song registered with a performing rights organization. If you are in the US that would mean ASCAP, BMI or SESAC.

However, if this is your first go at this sort of thing than I wouldn't get too excited about copyright/pros/ownership etc. Particularly if you are not a performer and the song is not being performed.

As for a collaborator, I take it you have some idea as to what kind of genre you think the music will be in? Well, do a search on soundclick.com or myspace (yeah, some musicians still hang out there) of somebody that composers in this genre. They don't have to physically live near you, but sometimes that can be a help, particularly if you are looking at producing recordings.

Hope this helps
