Cleveland CG7 Tour Black Pearl or Ping i15?
These are the two sets of irons i'm deciding between. I have hit both indoors. I was origionaly set on the i15s, but discovered the clevelands and now like them too. I think the clevelands look way better, especially with the black pearl finish. I read that the ball flight on the clevelands is a little higher because of the amount of spin the grooves get. Just hoping someone out there knows a little more about how these compare than i do and has had some experience on the course with either.
They're almost exactly the same. Grooves have no effect on shots from clean lies... it's only in the rough where grooves do their thing, which is to push grass and dirt away from the face, which allows for better ball-to-face contact.
The Cleveland's have a slightly higher ball flight because they have a little more offset. They have basically the same lofts as the i15's, and there isn't a big enough difference in sole width to say one has a lower (and more rearward) center of gravity.
One thing you might notice is that the Pings come stock with ascending weight shafts (AWT). What that means is, as the club gets shorter, the shaft gets heavier. Some companies have shafts that get lighter as the club gets shorter, and some shaft makers (like Project X) sell shafts that'll be the same weight throughout the set. There is no "right" or "wrong" answer... each method will elicit a different "feel" (dependent on the individual). Some prefer constant-weight, some don't; maybe you'll like it, maybe you won't... but now you're aware of it.
You have to like what you're looking at. You've made it clear that the CG7's appeal to you... and I don't blame you- that is a pretty neat look, but it will wear over time so be prepared. Ping puts their irons in a vibratory, which is how they get that unique look.
Regardless which you choose, get them fitted. It doesn't matter what you buy, if they're working against you, you're just wasting your money.
