What's drivers would be a good fit for my dad and his unorthodox swing?
I'm buying a driver for my dad for christmas. He is constantly impressed with my drives and wishes he could hit the ball as straight. The problem is his swing style, his grip is way to strong and his forward hand (right hand because he's south paw) is completely turned over with the back of it facing directly up. This forces his forward shoulder to jut much higher. For his stance he lines up aiming left, then pulls the club in to send the ball to the right side of the fairway, and it usually draws, sometimes slices, back to the middle. His driver is an old 9.5 loft with an offset head, probably at least 12 years old. Any suggestions as to what brand? I'm considering taylor made for the adjustability. He can't change how he swings much because he's been doing it for years. Thanks in advance.
Obviously your Dad has made his swing so he must lie in it...(or is that bed) Anyway I would make a couple of recommendations as far as a driver goes. !) Callaway...The Diablo Driver / If it can make Rocco Mediate be able to hit it straight then it must be halfway decent. All kidding aside because I truly like the swing of Rocco's. He uses the Jimmy Ballard method which is "Right on" as far as I am concerned.
Another kind of unorthodox swinger of the golf ball is Bubba Watson and while he can do almost anything with a golf ball and his driver I would say that he also has a swing only his Mother can love and uses a Ping driver which is now probably the K-15.
Now, on a more serious note and without spending a dime , have your Father check out some online instruction as he truly needs an overhaul on at least his posture and alignment. You know: The Basics.
I recommend an excellent online instructor by the name of Shawn Clement. (Website below.) The reason I said that this would not cost him even a penny to start with, is because Shawn has also put all of his instructional videos on YouTube for public consumption.
Now here is the plus as far as Shawn's instruction goes for your Dad. Shawn Clement has a very unusual instructional method as he can play both left and right handed and is proficient in both. He has shot a 68 or 69 in competition playing from both sides of the ball. Now that will help him tremendously as he will not have to look at everything in a mirror. Also Shawn can hit the ball incredibly straight and with power. He teaches a method that blends power and accuracy and biomechanics (which will help with your Dad's back) as it truly starts with the set up and gets better from there.
I look forward to hearing how all this goes for him and especially if he takes the advice about instruction. Parents get set in their ways but we also have logic to consider and the fact that we can get better so we can beat our children and keep them in their place. Also beating our peers consistently doesn't hurt either and is a contributing motivation factor to get better.
