What is the best iron flex for me? stiff or regular?
I have recently finalized my decision to purchase a set of Nike Victory Red Split Cavity Irons. I have also done plenty of research/trials on steel vs. graphite and have concluded that I want steel shafts. So I really need to know the best flex for me. I know I know I know I should just go try them out myself and see what works best blah blah but I want your opinions! I am 21, 200 lbs. with an athletic build and swinging nice and easy just does not happen for me. For example, in my last outing my partners used 8 irons, one a 7 iron, to reach green on a par 3 about 165 away. I used a 9 and with a well hit shot placed the ball pin high. I probably should have went with the 8 and taken off a bit of "cheese," but I consider my swing very natural but SS is above average. I do plan on getting my SS officially determined! Do you know anyone using a flex they shouldn't be? Does it hurt them? Or does any of it really matter in steel irons?! HELP!
A nice high drop and stop 165 9 iron would indicate an extra stiff shaft. How far do you hit a 3 iron?
Swing speed, tempo and release point will determine required/optimum flex for a player. I know a lot of guys that hit their short extra long but can't their long irons out there at all. Flex, kickpoint and weight matter in steel. Try hitting the 3,5,7,9 irons you wish to purchase and see which flex gives you the best distance(carry),control,and feel.
