Is being a pharmacy tech a good idea for a new mom?
Im debating going to remigton for pharmacy tech, and i need to know if they really work you crazy hours...like nights and holidays?
I am a pharmacist and the answer is that it depends on where you go to work. Many independent pharmacies have typical day time working hours. Some chain stores are open 24/7 and may needs tech present during off hours. Hospital pharmacies are open 24/7 and probably need tech during off hours. Many pharmacies will hire you for a specific shift though, and even if they need techs during strange hours, they will not force you to work those shifts unless you were hired to work those shifts. Other pharmacies will require you to work rotating shifts, where your shift may change everyday and depends on what shifts the scheduler assigned to you. Just make sure to ask in advance. If you need a set schedule during normal daytime hours, those jobs are available and I'm sure you could find one. I don't recommend taking classes to becoming certified before finding a job. Most places will train you on the job and you will earn your certification that way (while getting paid). The programs offered by schools are therefore usually a rip-off. Unless the market is very tight and you really need that edge to win out over your competition. However, laws vary from state to state and that advice may not apply in your state.
