What should I expect after Legg Calve Perthes (right hip) surgery on my 5 year old?
My 5 year old was diagnosed with LCPD in July. Surgery is scheduled for Oct. 8 I am very apprehensive on what to expect after surgery. He has an identical twin brother that is also very active. No signs of the disease in him. Thank goodness! How long will the recovery be, what should I expect? He is having a steel plate and two pins pit in his right hip. I am scared to death. He has not a "clue" as to what is going to happen to him other than he is going in the hospital and will have to use a wheel chair when he gets out. Please give me some suggestions as to how to handle this.
I have to tell you, a varus rotational osteotomy isn't done often on a 5 year old. Depending on the doctor, you can expect some time in a spica cast. The first 24 hours will be the worst. He may not remember any of it due to meds. But once released from the hospital, he might cry every time you move him. A lot of that is fear of pain. He may have potty accidents again. Many kids can't feel the need over the pain from the surgery. If in a cast, tuck a diaper in the cast for the first week. Nothing worse then a smelly cast. There is so much I could share.
