What are the best set of left handed irons can I buy for around 4-500 dollars?
My handicap is around 12-14 for 18 holes. Going with stiff shaft. Steel or graphite?
Many manufacturers make clubs in left handed versions. You are a 12 to 14 handicap so you can play some golf, not a hacker in other words, so you know a thing or two about your swing. Something that you need to consider is the shaft, not just the club head. Look at the pro tour for example. There are hundreds of them playing every day, and just about all of them are using something different. My point is that there are a lot of good clubs on the market and none of them is necessarily any better than the other. If you recall, there is even one player who uses Golfsmith equipment, a custom club manufacturer, his name escapes me at the moment. So you don't have to spend $2000 to get a set of clubs that even a pro can win with.
But, the shaft is the thing that drives the club and most amateurs know nothing about shafts. You state you will go with a stiff shaft. Okay, why? What is your swing speed, your tempo? Do you swing smoothly, building speed gradually, or do you hit hard from the top, work it really hard at the bottom. It makes a big difference. Did you know that each shaft manufacturer decides what to call their shafts, stiff, ex. stiff, firm, flexible, ladies, ect. There is no industry standard. Literally a stiff in one line can be a ladies shaft in another line. So just because you pick a club with stiff written on the shaft doesn't mean it fits your swing.
The best thing you could do is find a good custom club shop or a shop that allows you to try different shafts in the same line of shafts, ie, true temper firm, stiff and extra stiff, and lets you hit them on a range. Then you can actually compare the different feel of each one, see the difference in accuracy vs distance, ect. Graphite is excellent but isn't for everyone. Its expensive for a whole set of irons, although I have had a set of Callaway's in the past, and is usually overkill and at $500 you will be hard pressed to find anything like that for a full set. Graphite is lighter, but is that what you need? There are also excellent ultralight steel shafts out there that are very close to the weight of graphite but cost much less and may fit you better.
Enough said, just my opinion, but the shaft is much more important than the club head and that is where you need to do your research. I have had some of the most expensive clubs on the market but currently play with a set of custom clubs that were manufactured in Raleigh NC. I got a set of high end precision rifle shafts installed, got to test one of the club heads with three different stiffnesses and I now have the best set of clubs I have ever owned and I have played for about 35yrs, give or take, 4 to 8 handicap depending on how much I play. And I paid about $350.
Anyway, whatever you do, go somewhere that allows you to hit the clubs on a range. Hitting into a net tells you absolutely nothing other than how they feel. Also, they might test your club head speed and make a recommendation based on that. Its not always even close to the right recommendation. Again, you have to hit it to know for sure.
