How can I decrease friction and add traction to my mousetrap car?
I have used graphite as a lubricant. My back wheels are CD's and my front wheels are pinewood derby racer wheels. As traction, we were going to use foamy double stick tape and put sand paper over that. Does that sound good? Our car goes a litlle over 6 meters... How can we improve the distance while not dramatically altering our design. And don't say increase the axle to wheele ratio because i already did that.
i suppose ur doing the traditional mousetrap car with the extended arm that pulls the string thus rotating the axel?
the best way to improve distance is to cut out as much unneeded weight as possible (if its made out of heavy wood id suggest starting over with a much lighter, the lighter the better). make the arm that is rotating ur axel longer. if you increase the length of the arm it will accelerate over a longer period of time and thus travel further. another suggestion would be to use 2 of the same size wheels so the arm doesnt drag along the ground for increased friction. When i made mine i used record wheels in back CDs in front and the arm dragged a bit when the coil unraveled. i got mine to go 30+ meters. and also do NOT test ur mousetrap repeatedly because it will take the strength out of the spring after multiple tests. id replace the mousetrap before the competition or viewing for best results.
