A question about sunsets?
I'm somewhat confused over red sunsets.
Plenty of pictures show a fairly deep red in the sky, around sunset. But today, I was out photographing with my friend at a golf course in a suburb, and the sunset was more of a light yellow mixed with some blue, without much orange or red (which was rather unfortunate, since the place we were photographing would've looked spectacular with a crimson sky). Where I live, somewhat closer to the city, the sunsets are mostly yellow to orange.
My friend says in order for the sky to turn red there needs to be some dust/pollution/particles/haze in the air. I do notice that the sunset looks redder near the city. Is it true?
Correct. The spectacular eruption of Krakatoa in the nineteenth century spread high-level volcanic dust throughout the entire atmosphere and the world enjoyed the most spectacular sunsets for about a year as a result, until the dust settled or was washed out by rain.
