Should I replace my irons?
I have had the same set of Ping Eyes 2 for about 15 years. These days I only play about 4 rounds a year, but have been planning on playing more. I shoot in the low 90's most of the time. I have upgraded my driver 3 times over the years and can't imagine playing with my original driver, so my question is, has technology for irons grown the same way technology for drivers have? Am I doing myself a disservice by playing with old clubs?
In a word. NO. The Ping eye 2 irons are a very sought after used set. Well, at least they were until the groove rules changed. That being said, the rules don't apply to your particular game because you're an amateur and you're not competing in official USGA competition.
I would keep these irons until you can consistently break 90. when you do, then you can upgrade. Iron technology has changed in that irons are more forgiving now but it's NOT the bees knees. In my opinion, that kind of technology is making golfers worse. It's making swing flaws ok and making people content with sub-standard golf. Keep your ping eye 2 irons until the faces are too worn to work. If they have large imperfections that will hurt the ball flight, by all means replace them. Until that happens, use the hell out of them.
What you can do to get more mileage and definitely help your game is to make sure they're right for you. For a small investment (much less than buying new irons) you can get them re-gripped and double check the length of the clubs to make sure they fit you properly. Up to an inch can be added to the length without re-shafting the club and grip changes can be done for as little as $7 per club. so for about $100 US (maybe less) you could have a custom set of irons.
