Which club/s to fill the gap?
Right now in my bag I have a driver, a 3 wood, irons 6-P, SW, LW. I need something to fill the gap between the 3 wood and the 6 iron. I have hit with hybrids and I do not mind them. Wondering if I would be better off with a 5 wood though. I am a pretty high handicap, average drive of roughly 250. Any thoughts?
Just because the limit is 14 doesn't mean you have to have 14. If I were you, I'd skip the 5 wood. Go with hybrids- they're easier to hit and more versatile. If your 3 wood is 15* (the average loft), and your 6 iron is 30* (again, the average), I'd say get a 20* and a 25* hybrids, and a 50-52* gap wedge.
If the PW is 46* (you guessed it, the average) and your SW is 56*, go with a 51*, which would give you even 5* gaps between your PW, GW and SW, which helps promote even distance-spacing with those clubs.
As for the hybrids, the 20* can act as the 5 wood (it's only 1* weaker, so no real distance-loss), and the 25* is the bridge club. There's another 5* between the 20*, 25* and 6 iron.
This is only my opinion. Without knowing your game, it's truly hard to tell. Do you struggle with the long game? Maybe you need another long club, bringing it up to the full 14 limit. Be honest with yourself. If you have a hard time, deciding, just remember that whatever you choose, try to keep the lofts evenly spaced apart. If you do that and figure out how far each club goes, you'll be better prepared to hit any shot (even half-shots) you might come across.
