Is this a trick question?
Had this question in a homework assignment not too long ago and I was going to see if anybody could tell me if it's a trick question:
"How many cutting edges does a triangular carbide lathe tool insert have if it is positive rake? For negative rake?"
It has three no matter what, correct? It doesn't matter what the rake is...
A negative rake could have 6 edges, one turns it over for the second three. Actually some molded positive rake inserts can have 6 edges too, but I'm guessing the question refers to flat inserts in which case the positive insert only has three edges because if it was flipped over the clearance would become negative which wont work.
