Is my sweet spot larger or smaller on a Callaway X460 tour driver?
I have a Callaway driver X460 from year 2006 and it is the tour model. Does this mean that my tour model has a larger or smaller sweet spot? I'm considering upgrading and would like to know if I should get a regular model driver or a tour model. I have a 20 handicap and would consider myself average.
The sweet spot, the geometric center where the vertical measurement and the horizontal measurement intersect, never changes- it's always the size of (roughly) the eye of a needle. It's a scientific impossibility to grow the sweet spot, but you can make it more forgiving.
Tour models are usually slightly open-faced to facilitate a fade, with the weighting more forward as well (for the same reason). Some are smaller in Cubic Centimeters (between 425-430, give or take), as well. Most "regular" drivers are 460cc with the weight more in the back (and/or near the heel) to help hit a draw, since nearly all amateurs fight a slice.
The biggest difference between a "tour" model and a "regular" model is the MOI number. Moment of Inertia (MOI, or grams times centimeters squared... the USGA limit is 5,900 g*cm2) determines a drivers forgiveness. Most Tour pros have no trouble finding the sweet spot, so they don't need that kind of forgiveness. An amateur might find it 10 times in 100 drives, depending on skill level. The extra forgiveness, along with other measures like Callaway's hyperbolic (X shape behind the) face, are designed to help mis-hits fly straighter and farther... just not as far as if you'd "hit it on the screws".
If you consistently hit the sweet spot, or at least 7 out of 10 times and have no problems with slicing, you can stay with a "tour" model. It's probably in your best interest to get fit by a pro- s/he can determine what's truly best for you.
