Grip Harder and Get Stronger with a Thicker Bar
The simplest changes can have the most profound effects. In a previous article, I wrote about the importance of gripping hard. The harder the grip, the better the chances of finishing that last brutal rep.
There is something about gripping hard that focuses our attention and brings everything we have to bear on the situation at time. Arnold Schwarzenegger used to say that the mind failed first. In other words, we give up too quick.
But to get stronger and bigger, you cannot give up - to state the obvious. You must finish that rep because it is that last rep that makes you strong, or big. And gripping hard is a tremendous tool in gutting out the most important repetition of the set.
Having said all that, I live in state that seems to have more than its share of big guys. And a couple of those behemoths have occasionally mentioned that gripping hard is difficult for them, as their hands are too big.
A solution to their problem is actually a great training technique for the rest of us. The solution is to use a fatter handle. Simple, no. And many gyms have a larger than normal handle dumbbells and barbells (or adapters).
But here's the great news for the rest of us, a thick handle works great at building wrist and forearm strength. Don't believe me, try gripping a baseball as hard as you can for 30 seconds. Then, try it again with a softball; I am sure you will feel the difference.
More important, after 2 weeks of using a thicker bar; you will find that your lifts on a "regular" barbell or dumbbell will have gone up. When the links between our torso and the weights (yes, your arms) are functionally stronger, your overall strength goes up.
And, gripping a bar hard gives your mind the edge it needs not to give up first.
On a practical note, not all gyms have a set of thick handled dumbbells or barbells. If that is the case in your gym, or at your house, couple of substitutes to think about would be>
1. Thick, heavy duty sponges - Check out your local hardware store and see if you can find some strong, heavy duty sponges that are at least an inch thick. You can use these to wrap around a bar.
2. Microfiber drying/detailing wipes - Any discount like Kmart will carry a wide variety of these. Buy a set that are long enough to wrap a couple of times around a bar.
On a side note, until my operation, I dealt with tendinitis-like pain in my right forearm/elbow for many years. One of quickest ways to get immediate relief was to squeeze hard and flex my forearms for 30 seconds or longer. If you have similar pain, gripping hard on a thick bar works wonders. Give it a try.
