This new grip for my putter is?
one of those oversize grips. I am still trying to get used to it. I can't get a good role on it and it seems like I am using my wrists more as well as pushing the ball way of line. Which is why i bought it in the first place to eliminate breaking the wrists. Did anyone else have trouble when switching to an oversize putter grip? How do you correct these problems?
Many of the oversize grips, while attempting to quiet your wrists, actually muffle feedback to the point where you can't tell what is happening at all. If you make a conscious effort to putt by rocking the shoulders these grips can be helpful. If you have lost all feel then you may want to go back to a normal size and experiment with holding the putter in a different way to quiet the wrists. I have gone through spells where I make practice strokes with a claw type grip to groove the feeling and then use a normal grip to actually hit the putt.
The 1 thing I can tell is that anyone (including tour pros) who has ever switched to these huge grips has not had success over time. There may be a brief honeymoon where they putt great but there always seems to be a dropoff, which leads to more confusion and searching. You must become mentally strong enough to relax and hit good putts under pressure, instead of thinking about your stroke and worrying about what the next putt is going to do. Easy to say, very hard to do. It takes lots of discipline, but is very rewarding if you can get there.
