Hybrids: Adams A4 17 degree VS. Adams A3 16 degree?
I am looking for a club to replace my 3 wood, because I just like the ball flight of hybrids much better. My question is has anyone has any experience with both of these clubs with both stock shafts? A3 has the prolaunch red hybrid with high bend pt and A4 has Mitsubishi Rayon with mid/high bend pt. Im wondering which of the two would create best distance and accuracy and feel. Thank you.
One's 16*, the other's 17*. That's a smart move, in my opinion, switching out the 3w for a hybrid... not everyone can hit a FW (and even fewer will admit it to themselves) so getting something you CAN hit just makes perfect sense.
I used to game the A3 (19*), with an Aldila NVS 85 shaft... everything seemed to want to go left (I'm a lefty). Not a slice, just a push. I ended up switching to an Acer XK (19*) with a True Ace Cadence Red hybrid shaft- I liked the shape (more traditional)... it made me feel like I could release my hands fully at impact.
As far as shafts go, it's up to what's right for your game. Tests done by Golfsmith and Hireko (maybe more, but I'm only familiar with these two) have concluded that the difference between a low bend ( AKA kick) point and high bend point is "about 1*). A low BP shaft has the potential to feel "boardy" (like swinging a broomstick) compared to the softer high BP. Of course, if you have a high swing speed, the high BP shaft could feel like a spaghetti noodle...
There's more to it than BP- you need to think of length and shaft flex- those are more important by far than BP.
Now, if you had the same shaft (for testing purposes- same shaft flex, length, etc.) the 16* head will fly maybe 2-3 yards farther than the 17*. The 17* will be a hair more accurate (loft negates sidespin, but 1* is nigh negligible). So, it boils down to what your next club is. It wouldn't be a bad idea if you got a hybrid that's 10-20 yards longer than your next longest club- having constant distance gaps makes for better consistency.
I always say this and it does sound like a cop-out, but you're better off seeing a local club fitter. S/He can see you swing; they also have the tools on hand to determine things like length, shaft flex, head loft and everything else you'll need. I can give you generalizations, but a flesh-and-blood fitter will be MUCH more accurate.
