Golf tip: Hit it solid, not harder
The immaculate ball striking of US Open champion Lucas Glover paved the way for his first major title and has transformed his season on the PGA tour, according to one of America's top teaching pros. Florida-based Trevor Gliwski says Glover is an example to all those trying to hit the ball further - hit it solid, not harder.
Twenty-nine year old Glover, from South Carolina, ranked inside the world's top 20 has won more than $3.5m this season and Gliwski believes it is his excellent driving that has proved so lucrative. Mizuno MX-950 Irons adds that Glover never changes the shape of his swing, whether faced with a straight fairway or one that is either a dog-leg left or right.
"While clubhead speed produces distance, solid contact must not be overlooked," he says. "Lucas hits the ball hard (he's ranked 24th in Driving Distance on Tour) but he never swings at 100 per-cent. He's able to remain balanced and make consistently solid contact because he swings at 85 per-cent. Unless you absolutely have to rip it, you should always leave a little in the bag to consistently hit the centre of the clubface."
"Lucas hits the same shot off the tee every time and always plays his draw. For most players it's easier to play the same shot pattern, rather than try to work it both ways. Whether you draw Taylormade R9 Max Irons or fade it, try to hit the same shot every time, and you will drive it more consistently."
The Launcher DST is fitted with a longer, lighter Mitsubishi Diamana shaft contributing to the higher swing speeds and additional distance golfers can expect. With its pear-shaped head and jet black crown, no alignment aid, a square to open face angle that sits perfectly behind the ball and a classic sole design, it has those traditional great look at address.
A draw model with a 3-degree closed face is also available, as Mizuno MX-1000 Irons is a Tour model with a more compact 430cc head that is two degrees open and is powered by Diamana White Board shaft. A complementary range of fairway woods and hybrids will also be available in December, more news on those products will follow soon.
Cleveland says the variable face thickness of the clubface allows for more forgiveness from miss-hits without any appreciable loss of distance.
