This morning, I got a Cleveland Hibore XLS Driver, which I alway dreamt to have. I couldn't help to playing with it as soon as possible. A moment later, I appeared in the green with my love club. I found that it performed unbelievable.
I did not care for the original Hi-Bore hybrids enough to even review them. They weren't bad enough to write a negative review, but I certainly didn't feel like sending a couple of hours to write about--"AVERAGE". These newer "XLS" models are muxh better than average. Anyone considering a new hybrid owes these a good look. They have plenty of pop, despite the fairly standard issue steel shell, steel face, on an OEM shaft that so many others are already offering. They are definitely better balanced than their predecessors, and the Red/Gold Fuji shafts are so much better than your standard issue OEM shaft. These are darned good hybrids for the money.
These hybrids have good strong distance. I did not find them to be as long as either the Adams, or my Maksers, but they are well ahead of the generl pack in this department. The shafts help out quite a bit here. For the slow to moderate swingers ther is the Gold Shaft which has a lower kickpoint and moderate torque. Heavy hitters will prefer the Red Shaft w/ low torque and a higher kick point. For the real shotmakers in the bunch, and that is where this club shines, a True Temper Dynamic Gold Super Lite shaft is available.
The fact of the matter is, the stainless face on this club is not as "hot" as some of the others out there, but the distance is made up w/geometry of head shape, and good shaft options. (Cleveland CG12 black Wedge)
This is where the club actually settles in as very good, but not quite excellent. I found it to feel a tad harsh at impact, but at least the harshness is rewarded in distance.
It's not harsh as in complete lack of feel, or thuddy, but it just doesn't have any--for lack of a better phrase--"real give and take to it." Unfortunately that rang true for all three shafts, and I was at least rewarded w/both distance and workability. Kudos to Cleveland to at least upping the ante for a Lamkin Grip. Those always feel good to me.
This is definitely a club where one man's balance is another's nosedive off of the tightrope. Be very honest w/yourself about swingspeed, and your actual reasons for buying the club. The shafts are the major factor in this. I actually felt better swinging the club w/a True Temper Shaft. I'm not exactly a shotmaker, but I've gotten decent at working the ball. This club head and shaft combination was almost magical w/the 22* model. Conversely, the red shaft was right out for me.
Don't say that to my buddy who was there hitting them with me. His superior club head speed, and wanton desire for distance were both satisfied by the red shaft. Overall, I felt the gold shaft to be a really nice, safe shaft for me. I had to watch it in the higher lofted models to avoid ballooning the ball, whereas the steel shaft kept her right on line for me trajectory wise as well. Basically all three shafts are well mated to the club head, and you should consider the balance as quite good, though not quite sublime. There were no real hitches in between club head awareness and total swing, but there were some points during the swing where the club head's location seemed slightly vague.
This club is a well made hybrid that offers a lot of bang for the buck. There are plenty of loft options here too. 1,2,3,4,and 5 I-Woods work out to lofts of 16,19,22,25, and 28* respectively. The head shape has been blunted and boxed a bit, w/out going full fledged block-head. The scoop, as with the driver is definitely more graceful than previous iterations.
