Golf - Get a Grip

The way you hold your golf club is unique to you and your style of play and because of this your grip can have a massive influence on how you swing and consequently how you hit the ball. Your grip will determine how your arms and shoulders are positioned which will have an overall effect on the position of your body right from when you approach the ball all the way through your swing to hitting the ball and beyond.

The thing is that you can't learn the perfect grip from a book or from this article or whatever because your golf grip is very personal to you. This makes total sense if you think about it. If your grip can have such an influence on your shot because of how it affects the position of your arms and shoulders etc then it stands to reason that your body shape including the length of your arms and the size of your shoulders will have a big affect on the grip that you adopt.

There is something else you should consider here as well. If the size of your shoulders and arms etc has an affect on how you grip the club then does it not follow that the size of the actual grip on your club will have an affect on how you hold it? You see, manufacturers will provide clubs to retail outlets etc complete with the most popular grip which is relatively suitable for the largest number of people. Obviously this means they are likely to sell more clubs, especially in the high street as people are in a position to hold the club before they buy it. If the manufacturer shipped a club with a very narrow grip then it wouldn't feel right in the hands of most people that pick it up and it will therefore not sell as well.

The trouble is that this 'popular' grip size isn't going to be perfect for everyone due to the fact that everyone's hands and arms are slightly different and in some cases vastly different. Imagine a married couple who enjoy playing golf together. The man is huge compared to his wife. Consequently, the grip on the club that he uses is going to be too big for his wife and conversely hers will be too small for him causing him to hold the club too tightly. If he is holding the club too tightly then his arms and shoulders will be too tense which will have a huge impact on his swing.

Think about this. Your hands are the only contact point between you and your club and therefore between you and the ball. If you cannot get a good position on the club for your hands then everything else will be off. Consequently, be prepared to swap the standard grips that come with the club for ones which are suited to you. The club should be comfortable in your hands and you should be able to demonstrate a level of control over the club without having to hold it too tightly.

Grips are also manufactured in different materials. Some of these may react to your hands differently to others, which for example may make them feel slippery. This slippery feeling will also make you hold the club too tightly. So, you need to ensure you try out different grip sizes and materials in order to determine the one which is perfect for you.
