The Golf Grip, faults and fixes
Many golf grip styles have been developed over the years.
The most common you will find in golf instruction are the 10 finger grip, the overlap grip, and the interlocking grip. While most golfers use one of these 3 main golf grips, subtle variations in the grip can make a good swing go bad.
When a player seeks golf instruction, they are given a basic golf grip to use. When the swing starts to get out of sync, or the grip no longer feels comfortable, most golfers start to play around with their hands to fix the problem. These quick fixes are never permanent and the golfer will find himself fighting his hands and his swing for years to come if not corrected properly.
The most common fix for a golf grip is to make the grip stronger. Golf instructors see this often and it is achieved by turning the left hand over the top of the grip and the right hand to the side or slightly under the golf grip (For right handed players). This helps the hand to turn over much faster through the hitting area to correct a slice. The hands naturally want to get to a neutral position that was once taught early on in their golf instruction. While this does in fact work very effectively, the player will soon go on to a new swing thought, or their game will mature to the point that they learn to release their hands naturally. This "strong" golf grip will now cause the club to turn over too much resulting in a violent hook that will be uncontrollable to the player and lead to problems with not only accuracy and score, but with the swing itself. Players will now try to compensate for the golf grip change in their swing. It's a never ending cycle that usually results in not only more golf instruction to bring them back again to a neutral golf grip, and by that point, you are almost starting over.
Another, less serious fault is a "weak" golf grip. This is when both hands are more underneath the grip of the club. If you have issues with a big hook, this can be a temporary solution, although it can cause the club to lag too much and result in shots hit to the right. It is best to seek professional golf instruction to bring yourself back to a more neutral golf grip.
There are many variations of the above 2 faults, and there are many fixes to them. It is best to see your local golf professional if you feel you are fighting your golf grip. They will get you back into a golf grip style talked about in the previous article. Some of the best players in the world have a slightly weak or strong grip. They however, practice for hours every day to make it work for them and it is not result of needing a quick fix to their golf game. With proper golf instruction, you can get your game back on track, and in most cases, better than ever!
