Nokia 2220 Black Unlocked (Dual Sim)

Nokia 2220 slide is a slider and may well be one of the first of its kind to grace the economy range. Thankfully, the 2220 slide does not see a sacrifice in the classy charm of the slider form factor. It is exquisitely designed and looks unmistakably like a higher end phone. But the spell is broken when you power the dismally small 1.8 inch screen which features grainy images thanks to the low pixel density and only 65K colours. For a slider, we have to admit that the phone is pretty slim. Sure, it's thin on features and maybe that helps this model to stay size zero. Below the smallish screen is a nice D-pad with soft keys.

OK, the D-pad isn't all that big but the soft keys around it are really huge. And as the saying goes- the bigger the keys, the better the phone, holds true for the 2220 Slide. Sliding the phone up reveals the alphanumeric keypad; here, the keys are divided row wise but are widely spaced and offer good tactility and finger orientation. But because of the phone's contoured shape, the drooping bottom of the top portion of the phone's slider reduces the headroom above the 2 key. Only the back of the phone is truly indicative of this phone's basic handset status- it is made out of cheap but rugged plastic. The designers at Nokia have tried their best to make it look interesting by covering the loudspeaker grill with interesting wavy patterns.

Also, at the top of the back, the bare VGA camera looks important as it is surrounded by a silver frame. We've seen better camera get lesser attention than this. The phone sports the Series 40 user interface that we're used to seeing on Nokia firmware mid range handsets. The S40 UI has now officially penetrated the basic handset segment and we can expect to see more S40 basic phones in the future. The beauty of this is that the 2220 Slide has inherited all the nokia firmware upgrades and innumerous Java applications that have made their way into the UI. The only hiccup here is the phone's low processing power which sometimes seems inadequate to operate the UI smoothly. Apart from featuring the regular S40 apps, the phone also sports Nokia's latest app for developing communities- Nokia firmware Life Tools. It provides vital info on agriculture, education and also entertainment. These are area specific and broadcast through SMS messages. Of course, what information you get depends on what you subscribe for and can range from weather forecasts to career advice to daily news. What's more is that the information is available in two languages; English and a local language. Other apps on-board the phone are OviMail and a basic WAP 2.0 xHTML browser.
