Ajmer Shrief - Dargah Khwaja Sahib
Dargah Khwaja Sahib is one of the holiest of the Muslim shrines in the country. For people it is the gesture of thank giving and a desire to communicate with the saint. is the People from far and wide come to offer prayers to the Khwaja at the dargah and wash away all the sins of the life. Slowly with the time, it has become the major landmark of Ajmer.
While in the city you do not need the map to find the way, just stop anyone and ask for the directions to the Dargah and you will be guided to the mausoleum that lies beyond a huge arched red sandstone gate. No vehicle is allowed beyond this gateway. Devotees have to cover all the way by foot passing through the stalls and shops selling the sundry items.
Dargah Khwaja Sahib was built in the 13th century and is approached through the famous Buland Darwaza. It was built by the Mughal Emperor Humayun. The tomb is entirely made of the marble and the dome is gold plated. The place remains crowded throughout the year. People bow their head in front of the Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti to seek blessings or express gratitude for the fulfilled wish. Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti was born in Seistan (East Persia) around 1138 -39. Akbar – the Mughal Emperor made the annual pilgrimage to Ajmer.
In the courtyard there are two massive 'degs' (huge cauldrons). Devotees make offerings of rice, ghee and sugar in these 12 feet high degs. When the vessel is filled to the brim, the food is cooked. When the food is cooked, crowd present these empty the cauldron and sell the offerings as tabarukh.
The doomed chamber in the inner courtyard has the grave of the saint, that is encircled by the silver railing and a marble screen. A small door leads inside the mausoleum, which is adorned with the pink flowers and a shimmering chadar that is draped over the grave. Pilgrims take the dip in the sacred Anasagar Lake and offer prayers.
Urs fair is the major event that takes place at Dargah Khwaja Sahib, that is held on the seventh lunar month according to the Islamic calender. According to the legends say, it is believed that those who make a visit to the Dargah Khwaja Sahib on the occasion of Urs receives the special blessings from the saint.
It is very necessary to cover your head with the handkerchief or dupatta as soon as you enter the dargah. It is advisable to follow the rules, as the people are religious sensitive.
